AT A GLANCE
Shopify product photography should pair accurate product evidence with files that display well in your theme. Plan the image roles, keep variants correctly matched, verify current upload requirements, and inspect both product pages and collection thumbnails. Shopify supports several media types; some display behavior depends on the theme. AI-assisted scenes still require product-accuracy review.
Plan your Shopify product photography before upload
Uploading a large number of photos does not automatically create a useful product gallery. Begin with the buyer’s questions: what is the item, which variant is selected, what is included, and which detail matters? Then decide which image answers each question. A clean primary view, a genuine detail shot, and a plausible supporting scene usually serve different roles, so they should not be selected merely because they share a pleasing style.
Shopify’s own photography guidance recommends approaches for showing products clearly. Use it as a foundation, then adapt the plan to your actual products and storefront. A clothing item, a jar, and a multi-piece kit have different evidence needs. Keep the factual source set intact even if you later create campaign variations with AI.
Check Shopify’s current media guidance
Shopify’s Help Center states that product and collection images can be up to 5000 × 5000 pixels or 25 megapixels, with a file size under 20 MB. It identifies 2048 × 2048 pixels as a recommended size for square product images. These are platform guidance values, not a requirement that every product image must be square or exported at the maximum size. Verify the current documentation before preparing a large batch.
Shopify supports images, video, and 3D product media, while video and 3D display support depends on the theme. The first media item is the featured or main media item and is used in multiple storefront areas. That makes the first-image decision important: an art-directed wide composition may not be a good compact thumbnail. Check the active theme rather than assuming that every media type or crop behaves identically.
Assign a job to each gallery asset
| Asset | Useful role | Review before upload |
|---|---|---|
| Featured image | Identify the correct product quickly | Thumbnail crop, product visibility, and exact variant |
| Additional angle | Explain shape or construction | Actual captured details rather than invented surfaces |
| Detail view | Show material, label, or a feature | Clarity at the displayed size |
| Lifestyle image | Explain plausible context or scale | No misleading props, proportions, or use claims |
| Video | Show appearance or real function | Theme support, destination requirements, and accurate motion |
Decide the gallery order intentionally. The first assets should resolve the most important buying uncertainties. A campaign image can support the product story later without replacing the clearest view of the offered item. For a bundle, ensure the gallery does not contradict the product description about included contents.
Keep variants and packaging correct
Name source and final files so the SKU and variant are unambiguous. A customer selecting a blue item should not be shown a supporting image that appears to document a different variant without clear context. If packaging changes, review older gallery assets and campaign visuals. An image may still look attractive while no longer matching the shipped offer.
- Match source photography to the exact active product and variant.
- Keep unedited originals for comparison with retouched or generated outputs.
- Check that included components and quantities agree with the product page.
- Inspect the live page after assigning media, not only the upload preview.
- Use descriptive alternative text where supported, without keyword stuffing.
Accessibility text should help someone understand the relevant visual information. A description of the selected product view or a meaningful detail is more useful than repeating “Shopify product photography” across every image. Avoid adding unsupported claims to alternative text just as you would avoid them in visible copy.
Balance file quality with the way images are displayed
Export enough detail for the intended viewing experience while staying within current platform limits. Keep a high-quality master so you can prepare another crop later. Test the product page and collection grid on a phone as well as a larger screen. The important question is whether the customer can inspect the product without a distorted crop or an unreadable detail—not whether the source file has the largest possible dimensions.
A consistent ratio can help a theme’s product grid look coherent, but it should not cut off the object. Preview tall, wide, and square assets in the actual theme before standardizing the entire catalog. If the display requires a different crop, prepare an intentional version rather than hoping an automatic crop preserves the key feature.
Use AI-assisted scenes as reviewed supporting creative
Anora can generate product imagery from a product photo with written instructions and an optional reference image. That can help explore a lifestyle scene or a composition with room for campaign messaging. Anora does not automatically sync media to Shopify or validate the storefront’s rules. Export accepted content and add it through your own Shopify workflow.
Compare generated results to the original item. Watch for changed packaging text, shape, variant color, and included props. If you need factual detail or a real demonstration, use actual capture. A convincing scene is not proof that a product has an unverified feature, fits a specific space, or includes a pictured accessory.
Shopify product photography questions
What size should Shopify product images be?
Shopify recommends 2048 × 2048 pixels for square product images and documents larger upload limits. Choose dimensions for the intended display and verify current guidance; not every product image must be square or use the maximum size.
Can I add product video to Shopify?
Shopify supports product video, but display behavior depends on theme support and the relevant media requirements. Check your current theme and official documentation before preparing the final deliverable.
Does Anora connect directly to my Shopify catalog?
This product-content workflow generates and organizes assets; it does not automatically sync them to Shopify. Review the output, then upload through your own store workflow.
